Man Utd edge five-goal thriller as Nottingham Forest fume at VAR - 5 talking points
Matheus Cunha's controversial goal helped Manchester United beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 in their final home game of the Premier League season. United took an early lead through Luke Shaw, only to be pegged back by a header from Forest star Morato in the second half.
Then come the controversy, as Cunha scored despite the ball hitting Bryan Mbeumo's arm in the build-up. The goal was given following a lengthy VAR check and Michael Carrick's side soon got their third. Bruno Fernandes equalled the Premier League assist record by setting up Mbeumo for a tap-in before Morgan Gibbs-White's sublime finish made for a tense finish.
There was little jeopardy heading into game, with Forest officially safe under Vitor Pereira after relegation rivals West Ham lost to Arsenal last weekend. Meanwhile, United went into this one knowing that a single point from their final two games would be enough to seal third place.
Here are five talking points from Old Trafford.
1. Shaw sends timely reminder
A starter for all 37 of United's Premier League games this season, surely Shaw was bound to score in one of them. The defender left it until the Red Devils' penultimate game to get his goal, ending a three-year drought in the league.
After a Fernandes cross was only half cleared by Forest, Shaw was afforded far too much time to control the ball inside the penalty area. His sweetly-struck effort went across Matz Sels and into the bottom right-hand corner, breaking the deadlock after only five minutes.
Shaw's goal might have come just in the knick of time, too. England manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to name his final 26-man squad for the World Cup on Thursday, with Shaw having made the provisional list of 55.
2. Anderson makes an impression
Linked with both Manchester clubs ahead of the summer transfer window, there were plenty of eyes on Elliot Anderson here. The England international was his busy self in the middle of the park, taking more touches than another player in the first half.
Anderson also completed the most dribbles and made the most defensive contributions in the opening 45 before he assisted both of Forest's goals, showing his quality on the ball. He battled Casemiro in midfield and that's who he could be replacing if United win the race for his signature.
It's been reported that Forest will demand £125million for his signature, and his stock will be boosted if he performs well at the World Cup. Should United side move early?
3. United benefit from bizarre VAR call
Just two minutes after Forest drew level through Morato, United hit the back of the net. But their lead wasn't officially restored for another five.
After Mbeumo failed to control the ball in the box, it fell to Cunha, who produced a cool-headed finish in front of the Stretford End. Forest were incensed, though, believing that the the ball had touched Mbeumo's arm on the way through.
Indeed it had and referee Michael Salisbury was sent over to the monitor. It looked a forgone conclusion that the goal would be disallowed, yet Salisbury stuck with his original decision after replays showed that the ball hit Mbeumo's hip before his right arm.
The Red Devils were back in front much to Forest's anger.
4. Fernandes equals Premier League assist record
As the closing stages loomed, it looked to be a day to forget for Mbeumo after missing three guilt-edged chances. But the former Brentford star simply couldn't miss when Fernandes put it on a plate for him.
His latest assist means that United's captain has equalled the record held by both Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry of 20 in a single Premier League season. Can he go one better at Brighton next Sunday?
5. Farewell Casemiro
After Gibbs-White's moment of brilliance reduced the deficit, normally an experienced player like Casemiro would be crucial in helping United see the game out. But Carrick opted to take him off with 12 minutes of normal time remaining, as the Old Trafford crowd gave him a standing ovation.
The Brazilian - who was emotional as he came off - has enjoyed a resurgence after struggling during his second and third seasons at United, and he departs a fan favourite. We await confirmation of his next move, with Inter Miami interested in signing him.
