MOTM Poll: Borussia Dortmund Come from Behind to Beat Lille in the Champions League

Having stunk up the joint in a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the tie, Borussia Dortmund headed to France, knowing they would need to get a result against Lille at Stade Pierre-Mauroy to make it through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. They couldn’t have asked for a worse start, conceding after just five minutes, as Jonathan David converted a tame effort following errors from about five separate BVB players.

Lille’s opener seemed to wake Dortmund up, though, and they were unlucky to go in down by a goal at halftime. Pascal Groß, Serhou Guirassy, and Julians Ryerson and Brandt all had chances to level things up, but they couldn’t find the back of the net.

BVB continued to dominate after the break, and they got their equalizer just before the hour. Guirassy went down in the penalty area after minimal contact from Thomas Meunier. The referee gifted BVB a soft penalty, and Emre Can converted from the spot. Dortmund kept their foot on the gas, but the game opened up, leading to multiple good chances at both ends of the pitch. BVB landed the final blow when Maximilian Beier smashed home the winner from just inside the area.

It was a lively back-and-forth affair, but BVB deserved the win. They will now face Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-final. Here are the nominations for BVB’s Man of the Match in today’s 2-1 win against Lile.

Emre Can

Can led from the back throughout the game tonight, even when BVB were struggling. He was excellent on both sides of the ball and grabbed a goal from the spot.

Maximilian Beier

For much of the game, Beier was quiet, but he burst to life in the second half, and his efforts were rewarded with an excellent winning goal. Once BVB were ahead, he fought hard to help them see it out, making several crucial interventions in Dortmund’s half.

Pascal Groß

Groß put in a strong performance all over the pitch and was unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet tonight. He had two good chances in the first half; one was blocked on the line by Alexsandro Ribeiro, and the other hit the woodwork.

Marcel Sabitzer

Sabitzer has had an up-and-down season, but he was at his best tonight, putting in an industrious effort in midfield. He didn’t cover himself in glory on Lille’s early goal, but from that moment on he barely put a foot wrong.

Your Thoughts?

It was a massive improvement on their last two performances, but who was BVB’s best player tonight? Let us know in the comments!
